June 2: BHP Billiton Chile Escondida (Escondida) and Spence (Spence) mine remote operations union strike continues, BHP Billiton said that production has not been affected. The progress will continue to be reported by SMM.
The 200-member union runs BHP's integrated operations centre, which remotely manages mines, cathode copper and mineral processing plants in San Diego, and the strike was the first strike by a remote union. The strike is due to the failure to reach an agreement on the contract negotiations, and the union is dissatisfied with the contract offer put forward by BHP Billiton. The contract negotiations began at the end of March after union president Jessica Orellana said workers' demands and their key role in the production chain had been ignored.
Escondida (Escondida) is the largest copper mine in the world. Eskondida (Escondida) will produce 1.19 million tons of copper by 2020, while Spence (Spence) will produce 146700 tons of Chile's total 5.7 million tons. According to SMM statistics, Escondida production accounted for more than 60 per cent of BHP's total production in the first quarter of 2021.
